About the Symposium
On November 12, 2026, NCPP and NAPP are hosting a one-day online symposium dedicated entirely to artificial intelligence in patent preparation and prosecution. The day brings together leaders in AI, patent practice, governance, and technology to look at where AI stands today, where it's headed, and how to govern, deploy, and use it responsibly in patent work.
Sessions cover professional responsibility, confidentiality and security, implementation, quality control, patent drafting, prior art analysis, prosecution, and the workflows AI is starting to reshape. The program is built for a wide range of attendees, whether you're already experimenting with AI-assisted patent practice or haven't used AI yet and want a safe starting point. The focus stays squarely on patent preparation and prosecution, not litigation, contracts, or general legal practice.
Three Tracks of AI Education
Governance (2 hours Target CLE) Covers the ethical, legal, and professional-responsibility side of AI in patent work: confidentiality, privilege, data protection, inventorship, disclosure obligations, human oversight, and the policies needed to manage AI risk without unnecessarily limiting innovation.
Operations (2 hours Target CLE) Focused on moving from interest in AI to secure, effective implementation, tool evaluation, build-versus-buy decisions, cybersecurity, and workflow integration, useful whether you're deploying AI across a large organization or choosing tools for a solo or boutique practice.
Practice (2 hours Target CLE) Looks at how AI is changing day-to-day patent work: invention disclosure, prior art searching, specification and claim drafting, application review, office action analysis, prosecution strategy, and client counseling, along with where practitioner judgment still matters most.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the day, attendees should be able to:
- Explain the ethical, legal, and professional-responsibility considerations tied to AI in patent preparation and prosecution, including confidentiality, privilege, data protection, inventorship, disclosure obligations, human oversight, and accountability
- Develop practical approaches for securely implementing AI in a patent practice, from tool evaluation to cybersecurity and workflow integration
- Apply AI-assisted approaches across the patent workflow, from invention disclosure analysis and prior art searching to claim drafting, office action analysis, and client counseling
- Assess the capabilities, limitations, and risks of AI-assisted patent practice, and recognize where human oversight remains essential
About the Organizers
NAPP (National Association of Patent Practitioners) has represented patent practitioners since 1996, when it was founded in Virginia by Joy Bryant with an initial group of 19 patent agents. What began as a way for solo practitioners to connect with a "colleague down the hall" has grown into an organization with hundreds of members across the US and internationally, split roughly evenly between patent agents and attorneys, at every stage of their careers. NAPP supports its members through an annual conference and active online forums covering patent prosecution, foreign filing, patent law reform, and practice management, along with a mentorship program for practitioners just starting out.
NCPP co-presents this year's symposium alongside NAPP, bringing its own focus on patent practice and continuing education to the program.
